Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath today informed that, in a major milestone in the organic farming movement of the state, organic wheat has been successfully cultivated for the first time in Tripura.
This initiative has been implemented under the visionary leadership of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath, with the support of the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA). It has been carried out in collaboration with various organic Farmer Producers’ Organizations (FPCs) and pioneer farmers of the state.
The Minister informed that the crop has been cultivated in various clusters, including Jirania, Lefunga, Hejamara, Mandai, Belbari, Jampuijla, Tulashikhar, Teliamura, Ompi, and Kalyanpur. This marks a significant step in crop diversification under organic farming and has opened new horizons for organic crop production in Tripura.
He further stated that, according to data on conventional wheat cultivation in the state, the average production from 2018–19 to 2024–25 was about 2.119 metric tons per hectare, whereas the organic wheat production in the current year reached 3.03 MT/ha, which is significantly higher than conventional cultivation.
Notably, this production is close to the national average of 3.5 MT/ha, highlighting the potential of the organic production system in the state.
“Farmers expressed satisfaction with this achievement and appreciated TSOFDA’s support in introducing and promoting wheat as a new organic crop. Many farmers described this initiative as a historic beginning, which will help in nutritional security, crop diversification, and increasing farmers’ income,” said the Minister.
The Minister added that with institutional support and cooperative participation of farmers through FPCs, the state will be able to diversify the production of important food grains, strengthening self-reliance, sustainable development, and market-oriented growth.
He further noted that this success reflects the growing maturity of Tripura's organic ecosystem and will pave the way for future expansion of organic wheat cultivation areas, seed production, and value addition such as organic flour and healthy food products.
“This initiative will strengthen nutrition security, sustainable agriculture, climate resilience, and market opportunities for organic farmers, while further strengthening Tripura's position as an emerging organic hub of North East India,” the Minister said.
