The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has initiated proceedings over allegations that a Member of the District Council (MDC) under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) demanded Rs 22 lakh from a government official.

The Commission took suo motu cognizance based on a news report published on February 23, 2026, which claimed that Hangsa Kumar Tripura allegedly coerced an Executive Engineer to hand over funds linked to a development project. The amount was reportedly sanctioned for constructing a four-kilometre road connecting ADC Village in the Tribal Colony area to Bhagyamani Roypara under the Chawmanu Sub-Zonal Office in Dhalai district. Another article titled “Hangsa Kumar’s Unlimited Power” also highlighted similar accusations.

After reviewing the reports, the Commission noted that the allegations, if true, point to serious misconduct, including extortion and possible misuse of public money by an elected representative.

Taking the matter seriously, the THRC has directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, to register an FIR if a preliminary inquiry finds the claims to be prima facie valid. The DGP has been asked to submit an action taken report within seven days.

The Commission has made the Chief Executive Member and Chief Executive Officer of TTAADC, the DGP of Tripura, the Superintendent of Police of Dhalai district, and the Officer-in-Charge of Chawmanu Police Station parties to the case, seeking detailed reports from them within two weeks.

A notice has also been served to Hangsa Kumar Tripura, whose office is located in Khumlwng, West Tripura, asking him to present his response to the allegations.
