The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has directed the Directorate of Health Services to submit reports on two separate incidents involving alleged medical negligence at major government hospitals in the state.
In the first case, the Commission took note of media reports published on June 1 concerning the death of a patient at GB Pant Hospital. According to the reports, the patient was reportedly left unattended in a toilet attached to the Medicine Ward for an extended period. It was alleged that despite the patient's condition, no medical staff, including doctors or nurses, checked on him. Family members later found the patient in a critical state, but he had already passed away.
THRC Chairperson Arindam Lodh, in an order issued by the Commission, observed that the allegations point to a serious lapse in patient care and raise concerns regarding the violation of the patient's basic human rights. Before initiating formal proceedings, the Commission has sought a detailed report from the Director of Health Services within 15 days.
In a separate matter, the Commission also examined reports published on May 30 regarding the death of a pregnant woman at IGM Hospital. Newspaper accounts alleged that the woman died due to the absence of medical officers at the time she required treatment. The reports highlighted concerns over the quality of healthcare services available at the hospital.
Taking serious note of the allegations, the THRC stated that the incident, if proven, reflects a significant failure in healthcare delivery and may constitute a violation of the patient's rights. The Commission has forwarded copies of the relevant newspaper reports to the Director of Health Services and requested a comprehensive report on the matter.
The Directorate of Health Services has been instructed to submit its findings in both cases within 15 days. The Commission has scheduled July 3 for the submission and review of the reports.
