Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma has written to the Chairman of the Tripura Human Rights Commission, seeking urgent and strict action against security personnel and supervising officials accused of assaulting a woman leader during the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections held on April 12.
In his letter, Debbarma stated that on April 14, he, along with other senior women leaders of the party, visited the residence of Supriya Choudhury, a district-level leader of the Tripura Women Federation (TWF) affiliated with the Tipra Motha Party, to understand the incident.
According to the account shared in the letter, Choudhury and other women representatives were present at the SDM office in Sabroom, South Tripura district, to oversee the polling process and ensure peaceful conduct. After voting concluded, they allegedly noticed several irregularities and malpractices during the transfer of EVMs to the designated strong room, reportedly favoring a particular political party.
When the women raised objections in an attempt to uphold proper procedures and prevent unrest, the situation escalated. Despite the presence of some women police personnel, Debbarma alleged that male security personnel resorted to excessive force.
The letter claims that the security forces carried out a coordinated lathi charge, causing serious injuries. It further alleges that a male security personnel kicked Choudhury from behind, resulting in severe physical harm. Debbarma described the use of force as “excessive and disproportionate,” stating that it not only caused physical and mental trauma but also violated the dignity and modesty of the victim in a public setting.
He also held supervisory official accountable for failing to prevent the incident.
The MLA has urged the Human Rights Commission to take strong and exemplary action against those involved, calling the incident unlawful, unethical, and a serious violation of human rights.
