Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Wednesday stated that Tripura has recorded a sharp decline in overall crime in 2025, attributing the improvement to the dedicated efforts of the Tripura Police and increased use of technology in law enforcement.

Speaking at the Police Week parade held at AD Nagar in Agartala, Dr. Saha said the annual observance honours the service and sacrifices of police personnel, many of whom have laid down their lives in the line of duty. He described policing as a “service of sacrifice” and praised the force for ensuring peace and security across the state.

Congratulating the police force, which recently marked 150 years of service, the Chief Minister noted that Tripura Police is among the oldest forces in the country and was conferred the President’s Colour on January 12, 2012. He emphasised that with criminals adopting new methods, the police must also upgrade their skills and technological capabilities. Plans are underway to provide specialised training to tackle emerging challenges, he added.

Highlighting crime statistics, Dr. Saha said the state has seen a notable improvement compared to the past two decades. Crime rates in 2025 declined by 8.20 percent compared to 2024, with total registered cases dropping from 4,033 last year to 3,698 this year. Property-related offences decreased by around 16 percent, while crimes against the body fell by 14.54 percent.

Crimes against women recorded an 8.1 percent decline in 2025. The government has prioritised women’s safety by establishing 24x7 women help desks in every police station and setting up nine all-women police stations across districts. The Chief Minister said he regularly reviews reports to monitor progress.

Addressing road safety, Dr. Saha said a special traffic control drive has been launched under a “Zero Accident Programme.” Authorities have identified 16 accident black spots and 84 accident-prone areas, and interceptor vehicles have been deployed in every district. Road accidents declined by 8.82 percent in 2025 compared to 2024, while fatalities dropped by 13 percent.

Reiterating the government’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs, Dr. Saha said action under the NDPS Act has intensified. Although NDPS cases have risen by 11.06 percent, this reflects stricter enforcement and increased seizures. Cannabis seizures rose by 14.4 percent, cough syrup seizures by 145.73 percent, and tablet seizures by 26.37 percent. The destruction of cannabis plants increased by 94.71 percent, while overall seizure and destruction rose by 92.70 percent, with contraband valued at approximately ₹1,641.89 crore. He added that the government is exploring greater use of technology to enhance cannabis destruction drives.

On cross-border crime, the Chief Minister said Tripura Police is acting as a strong second line of defence. In 2025, police arrested 576 illegal infiltrators and 102 touts. Steps are also being taken to modernise the cyber police station to better address cybercrime.

Beyond law enforcement, the police have organised 46 blood donation camps this year and continue to engage in various philanthropic activities. The state recently recruited 953 constables, including 318 women and 635 men. Recruitment for 916 additional constables will begin soon, and approval has been granted to recruit 218 Sub-Inspectors.

Senior officials, including the Director General of Police and the Home Secretary, were present at the event.
