The Tripura High Court has sought an explanation from the state government over allegations that East Agartala Police Station refused to register a complaint in connection with an alleged assault case.
According to Advocate Purushottam Roy Barman, the incident took place on April 4 at the residence of Ratna Roy in Banamalipur. It is alleged that a group of miscreants entered the house and brutally assaulted her son, Saikat Roy. Ratna Roy and her husband were also allegedly attacked when they tried to intervene.
The petition further alleges that the attackers forcibly took Saikat Roy to East Agartala Police Station, where he was again assaulted inside the police station premises. The family claimed that he sustained serious injuries, including injuries to his private parts.
On April 6, Ratna Roy reportedly approached the East Agartala Women Police Station to lodge a formal complaint. However, police allegedly refused to register the case. Despite subsequently informing the Director General of Police and the district Superintendent of Police, the family claimed that no FIR was registered.
Following this, Ratna Roy moved the Tripura High Court by filing a writ petition. The matter was heard by a Division Bench comprising Justice M. S. Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit.
During the hearing, the High Court observed that the police had acted unlawfully by allegedly failing to register the complaint despite receiving information about the incident. The court directed the state government to submit an affidavit in response and scheduled the next hearing for May 12.
The court also instructed the Chief Judicial Magistrate of West Tripura district to immediately visit East Agartala Police Station and secure CCTV footage from April 4 to April 6. Acting on the court’s directive, the CCTV recordings were reportedly collected and taken into custody on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the family has also alleged that construction work at Ratna Roy’s residence had earlier been halted by a task force led by Rabindranath Ghosh, an employee of the Agartala Municipal Corporation. According to the allegations, he demanded Rs 2 lakh from the family, and Saikat Roy was later assaulted by Rabindranath Ghosh and his associates after the family refused to pay the money.
