A delegation of journalists from across the state met Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar in Agartala today to raise serious concerns over open threats made against senior journalist and editor of Ajker Fariad, Shanit Deb Roy.
The journalists’ deputation was prompted by an incident of unruly behaviour and intimidation infornt of the residence of Shanit Deb Roy in Milan Sangha locality led by Deputy Speaker Ram Prasad Paul.
According to media sources, a group of individuals printed the editor’s photograph, marked it with a red cross, and made overt threats outside his home , an action that local news bodies have condemned as unprecedented in the state’s history.
Speaking to reporters, the President of the Agartala Press Club and senior editor of Headlines Tripura Nationals said the delegation approached the DGP after a series of worrying events involving members of the press. They alleged that Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Ram Prasad Paul, had openly threatened journalists during a gathering in front of his residence, though formal details or videos of that particular event are still being examined.
The delegation also briefed the police chief about how a Tipra Motha MLA, Ranjit Debbarma, had allegedly issued threatening statements against journalists — including previously circulated video messages that media bodies have described as provocative — contributing to an atmosphere of fear among reporters and editors in the state.
Journalists emphasized that while there are lawful channels to address allegations or grievances, the open and public nature of the threats against a senior editor has shocked the media fraternity. They urged the police to ensure press freedom and the personal safety of journalists working in Tripura.
In response, DGP Dhankar assured the delegation that adequate security has been provided at and around the residence of the threatened editor, and that police would take “appropriate steps as per law” to investigate the matter and prevent further intimidation.
The press delegation’s move comes amid broader protests by media workers across Tripura over growing concerns related to safety, intimidation and the independence of the press, including a recent massive sit‑in protest where journalists presented an 11‑point charter of demands to state authorities.
The delegation comprises senior journalist Biswendu Bhattacharya, Sebak Bhattacharya, Ranjit Debbarma and others.
