In a significant move to eliminate child marriage, the Tripura State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has rolled out a comprehensive awareness campaign across West Tripura.
To reach remote villages, bustling markets, and community gathering spots, special promotional vehicles have been deployed throughout the district.
The campaign aims to reduce the incidence of child marriage in the state to below 5% by 2029.
The program was officially inaugurated at the Commission’s office grounds at Melar Math, where three awareness vehicles were flagged off by the Commission’s Chairperson, Jayanti Debbarma. On the opening day, the vehicles are scheduled to operate in Mohanpur, Bamutia, and Dukli blocks, with plans to cover all nine blocks across the three sub-divisions of West Tripura.
Campaign teams will distribute leaflets and informational material, highlighting the adverse impacts of child marriage, relevant legal provisions, and children’s rights. Chairperson Debbarma stressed that the law mandates a minimum marriage age of 18 for girls and 21 for boys, with violations considered punishable offenses.
The awareness drive, which began on November 29, 2025, will continue until International Women’s Day on March 8. From February 23, the campaign will incorporate street plays in tea gardens and crowded areas to actively engage communities.
Debbarma noted that the success of this initiative hinges on the active involvement of the public, urging citizens to participate and spread awareness.
