CPI(M) Politburo member and Tripura opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury today has sharply criticized the BJP, accusing the RSS-backed party of attempting to rewrite the country’s history and labeling them “barbaric.”

Chaudhury made the remarks during a visit to the CPI(M) office in Patichhari, which he claimed was recently attacked by BJP-backed miscreants.

The comments coincided with the 38th Bir Chandra Manu Martyrs’ Day, observed by the CPI(M) across various parts of the state. According to Chaudhury, the party organized short, respectful programs to honor the martyrs, including an event in Patichhari, which he alleged was disrupted by an attack from BJP supporters.

Recalling the historical context, Chaudhury noted that in 1988, during a coalition government, 13 people lost their lives to fascist terror. “At that time, there was no BJP presence in the state,” he said, questioning why such an incident would occur on Martyrs’ Day now that the BJP is in power. He demanded clarity on the motive behind the assault on a day meant to pay tribute to the martyrs.

Chaudhury also condemned the central BJP government and the RSS, accusing them of trying to erase history and reconstruct the past to fit their own narrative. “They are attempting to reshape the country’s history by erasing its true past,” he said, asserting that such actions are part of a broader effort to manipulate historical memory for political gain.

The statements underscore ongoing tensions between the CPI(M) and the BJP in Tripura, particularly regarding historical narratives and public commemorations. Chaudhury urged citizens and political observers to remain vigilant against attempts to distort historical facts and stressed the importance of honoring the sacrifices of those who fought against oppression.
