Tripura Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Thursday sharply criticized the ruling BJP for allegedly attacking the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) party office in Agartala.

He described the incident, along with the reported harassment of AITC leaders at MBB Airport, as a “clear sign of autocracy” and a “dark chapter in the political history of Tripura.”

Chaudhury, who also serves as the CPI(M) state committee secretary, alleged that since 2018, the BJP has been systematically targeting offices of opposition parties and vandalizing them—often using bulldozers. “The ruling party attacks whoever they dislike, whenever they want,” he claimed.

The CPI(M) leader said that during Durga Puja, five party offices were vandalized and ransacked overnight, including one in Agartala. “Just two days ago, the Trinamool Congress office was attacked in front of the Tripura Police. Meanwhile, in West Bengal, one BJP MP and an MLA reportedly came under attack,” Chaudhury added.

He stated that while incidents in West Bengal must be condemned democratically, retaliatory violence in Tripura cannot be justified. “Attacking a party office in response is a political crime and an assault on democracy,” he said.

According to Chaudhury, a team of Trinamool Congress leaders arrived in Tripura on Wednesday after informing the state government in advance to inspect the vandalized party office. “The government was responsible for ensuring their security, but what we witnessed was shameful. The rented car meant for them was blocked by ruling party goons at MBB Airport, forcing them to wait for a long time. This is a shameful incident and a dark chapter in Tripura’s political history. Later, they were eventually provided with a vehicle,” he said.

The Leader of Opposition added that while the CPI(M) condemns violent incidents in West Bengal, it equally opposes the “autocratic harassment” faced by TMC leaders in Tripura.
