In a remarkable achievement for the state’s healthcare sector, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, in collaboration with Sija Hospital in Manipur, successfully conducted the sixth and seventh kidney transplants in Tripura on March 30 and 31, 2026. Both donors and recipients are reported to be healthy and under continuous medical supervision.
This milestone is particularly noteworthy as, for the first time in the state, two kidney transplants were completed on consecutive days. Earlier, kidney transplants were performed individually, making this achievement a significant advancement in Tripura’s medical history.
The sixth kidney transplant, performed on March 30, involved a 36-year-old resident of Kalsi, Bykhora, South Tripura, who received a kidney from his childhood friend, a 33-year-old youth from the same area. The seventh transplant, conducted on March 31, involved a 33-year-old patient from Champaknagar, who received a kidney donated by his 59-year-old father. Both procedures were successful, with donors and recipients reported to be in stable condition under 24-hour medical observation.
The medical teams from AGMC and GBP Hospital played a pivotal role in these transplants. The Nephrology Department was led by Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das, and Dr. Udayan Saha, while the Urology Department included Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh, and Dr. Jiban Debnath. Anaesthesia support was provided by Dr. Bhaskar Majumdar, Dr. Tapan Debbarma, and Dr. Jagriti Aich. Sija Hospital contributed with Dr. Soumyarendra Pawnam and Dr. Maharavam Mahale as Urologists and Transplant Surgeons, along with Dr. Thaw Dam Yashwantha Singh and Dr. Thaw Bram Chandis Singh as consultant anaesthetists. The operations were further supported by dedicated nurses and OT technicians, with Senior Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty overseeing the procedures.
The sixth transplant began at 9:00 am and concluded at 3:00 pm, lasting approximately six hours, while the seventh started at 8:30 am and concluded at 1:30 pm, taking around five hours.
These back-to-back successes reflect the tireless efforts of the state government and healthcare professionals to advance organ transplantation services in Tripura.
Since the first kidney transplant in the state on July 8, 2024, Tripura has steadily progressed in this field, with the fifth transplant successfully completed on November 4, 2025. The recent consecutive transplants mark a new chapter in the state’s medical achievements and offer hope to many patients requiring organ transplants.
