Highlighting the role of elders in shaping a just and equitable society, Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy urged senior citizens to guide the younger generation against prejudice and injustice during the International Older Persons Day-2025 program held at Agartala Town Hall today.

Organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, the event coincided with the symbolic celebration of the day in Tripura, as October 1 this year overlapped with Durga Puja.

Minister Tisku Roy emphasized that elderly citizens are repositories of experience and wisdom, and their guidance is essential in ensuring that societal values are preserved. “Rights will not be protected through legal battles alone. I request you, our respected elders, to make the current generation aware of injustice, prejudice, and discrimination, and to provide honest advice,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of intergenerational responsibility, noting that while parents work hard to raise children into successful professionals, many children fail to recognize or care for their elders. “We do not want this in India,” he said, calling for a renewed focus on respect, awareness, and ethical guidance from senior citizens.

The program reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of elderly citizens, encouraging active participation of seniors in shaping a fair and just society.
