Tripura’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Monday strongly criticized the opposition Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), accusing the party of illegally occupying government land and constructing offices during its time in power.
He also called for bulldozer action to demolish such structures.
The remarks were made on the final day of the Tripura Legislative Assembly’s budget session, following a query raised by CPI(M) MLA Shyamal Chakraborty regarding alleged encroachment on government land in Boxanagar, located in Sepahijala district.
Responding to the question, Nath stated that the government has already initiated action against illegal land occupation, including intervention by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate. He further alleged that during CPI(M)’s rule, more than 100 kani of government land had been encroached upon and used for unauthorized rubber plantations.
“You should respect the Chief Minister for the decisive steps being taken now. During your tenure, land across Tripura—from south to north—was forcefully occupied, including both government and private land. There were even incidents of violence in broad daylight,” Nath said, adding that such actions should be condemned.
He emphasized that the current government is taking strict measures and reiterated his demand that all illegal CPI(M) offices be demolished using bulldozers.
Chief Minister Manik Saha backed Nath’s statements and cited a specific case from Amarpur in Gomati district. According to him, a CPI(M) party office had encroached on 556 square feet of government khas land without authorization.
He noted that eviction proceedings were initiated in May 2018 in the court of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Amarpur. The Gomati district administration had ordered the eviction, which was later challenged by CPI(M) in the High Court. However, the petition was ultimately dismissed, upholding the eviction order.
