The state of Tripura has registered its lowest-ever Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), marking a major improvement in public health outcomes, according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin released by the Registrar General of India in May 2026.
As per the Health Department data for 2024, Tripura’s IMR has fallen to 12 deaths per 1,000 live births, significantly better than the national average of 24. Among northeastern states, Assam recorded 29, Meghalaya 31, and Arunachal Pradesh 17, placing Tripura ahead in child survival indicators.
Officials noted that this is the best performance ever recorded for the state. The previous SRS Bulletin, released in September 2025, had reported an IMR of 15 for 2023, which was earlier the lowest in Tripura’s history.
The report also points to improvements in broader demographic indicators. The state’s birth rate now stands at 15 per 1,000 population, below the national average of 18.3. The death rate is 5.9 per 1,000, also lower than the national figure of 6.4. As a result, the natural growth rate has come down to 9.1 compared to the national average of 11.9.
Health and Family Welfare officials attributed this progress to sustained improvements in healthcare delivery, including stronger antenatal and postnatal care, expanded immunisation coverage, better nutrition support, and increased institutional deliveries across the state.
The government stated that coordinated efforts by healthcare workers, doctors, and frontline staff have helped bring essential services closer to communities, improving maternal and child health outcomes.
Experts, however, cautioned that continued focus on rural healthcare access, child nutrition, and early childhood interventions will be necessary to maintain and further improve these gains.
Chief Minister Manik Saha said the achievement reflects sustained improvements in maternal and child healthcare systems, including strengthened Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU), Newborn Stabilization Units (NBSU), immunisation programs, and community health initiatives.
He also acknowledged the support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda in enhancing the state’s healthcare infrastructure and services.
