In a major boost to medical education in Tripura, Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) has received approval to increase its MBBS intake from 150 to 250 seats from the 2026-27 academic session.
The addition of 100 new seats is expected to open up greater opportunities for aspiring medical students and further strengthen the state’s medical education ecosystem.
Welcoming the development, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha said the expansion would provide more avenues for the youth to pursue medical education and play an important role in strengthening Tripura’s healthcare system in the long run.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their continued support and cooperation in expanding medical education and strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state.
With the latest expansion, AGMC has joined the group of prominent medical institutions across the country with an MBBS intake of 250 seats. The list includes Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Ahmedabad, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow, among others.
The increase in the number of seats is expected to benefit a larger number of students aspiring to enter the medical profession while also contributing to the creation of a stronger pool of trained healthcare professionals.
Dr. Saha said that investing in medical education and healthcare infrastructure would have a lasting impact on the state, adding that a robust medical education system today would help build a healthier and more prosperous Tripura tomorrow.
