At least three persons, including a TIPRA Motha Party candidate, were reportedly injured in an alleged firing incident at Warrengbari in Maharani area of Gomati district on Monday afternoon, amid polling for the Village Committee elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
According to police sources, the incident took place between around 2 pm and 2:15 pm at Warrengbari, under R.K. Pur police station.
The injured TIPRA Motha candidate was identified as Khachindra Reang (34), alias Patindra, a resident of Warrengbari. He is contesting from Ward No. 2 of Gamaria Village Committee.
Police said Reang sustained what was initially described as a bullet-like injury. He was first taken to Maharani Primary Health Centre and later referred to Gomati District Hospital in Udaipur for further treatment. Police said his condition was stable.
Two other persons, identified as Nithak Jamatia (26) and Uday Ram Reang (40), were also injured in the incident and admitted to Gomati District Hospital.
According to one of the injured persons, a group of around seven to eight unidentified individuals allegedly arrived near the Warrengbari polling centre and attempted to enter the premises. When they were allegedly stopped, the group reportedly opened fire with a pistol, injuring three persons.
The incident created tension in the area, prompting the deployment of additional security personnel.
Gomati district SP Anirban Das confirmed the incident and said one person had sustained a gunshot injury and was immediately shifted to hospital. He added that the injured person was currently stable.
Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify those allegedly involved and determine the exact nature of the injuries. Further details are awaited.
