A woman was killed and four others injured in a road accident in Dhalai district on Monday while they were reportedly travelling to cast their votes in the ongoing Village Committee elections.
The accident took place in the Bonkumari area when a battery-operated tom-tom carrying several passengers, who were on their way to Chawmanu to exercise their franchise, met with an accident.
The deceased was identified as Lakshmi Smriti Chakma. Four other passengers sustained injuries in the incident.
Following the accident, the injured were rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. They were later referred to Kulai Hospital for further treatment, considering their condition, sources said.
The incident has triggered grief in the area, with the victims reportedly meeting with the accident while travelling to participate in the democratic process.
