Tension surfaced along the India-Bangladesh international border in the Ashabari area after two Bangladeshi police personnel were allegedly detained for crossing into Indian territory. Following a flag meeting between the border forces and concerned authorities of the two countries, the personnel were reportedly handed over to the Bangladeshi authorities.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place near Border Pillar No. 2059 in the Ashabari border area under Shashidal Union of Brahmanpara Police Station in Bangladesh’s Cumilla district.
Sources claimed that at around 10:30 pm on Thursday, Assistant Sub-Inspector Imran Hossain and Constable Rohit Dewan of Brahmanpara Police Station allegedly crossed the international border while on night patrol and entered Indian territory near Gates No. 167 and 168 in the Ashabari border area.
Local residents reportedly noticed the presence of the two personnel on the Indian side, following which news of their detention spread in the area. Allegations also emerged that the two police personnel were under the influence of alcohol. However, this claim could not be independently verified, and no official statement was available on the matter.
After receiving information about the incident, the Border Security Force (BSF) reportedly took charge of the matter and detained the two Bangladeshi personnel. According to sources, they were questioned overnight at the Ashabari Border Outpost (BOP).
On Friday, a flag meeting was arranged following communication between the border forces and concerned authorities of the two countries. According to available information, the meeting was held at the zero point near Gate No. 163 and Border Pillar No. 2057 along the Rahimpur border, under the initiative of the BSF’s 49th Battalion.
Representatives of the border forces, police and intelligence agencies of both countries were reportedly present at the meeting. Following prolonged discussions, the process of handing over the two Bangladeshi police personnel to the authorities of Bangladesh was completed.
Meanwhile, questions have emerged over the circumstances that led the two personnel to allegedly cross the international border at night. Claims have also surfaced that yaba tablets were found in their possession. However, these allegations have not been independently verified or officially confirmed.
Another unverified claim suggests that the personnel may have entered India for an illicit purpose involving an Indian woman. No reliable evidence or official confirmation has emerged to substantiate this allegation either.
In the absence of an official statement, the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear. The allegations regarding alcohol consumption, possession of yaba tablets and the alleged motive for crossing the border should be treated as unverified until confirmed by the competent authorities.
The incident has renewed discussions over border security and surveillance in the area. Residents are awaiting further clarification from the authorities regarding the reasons behind the alleged crossing, whether any prohibited items were involved and the circumstances that led to the two personnel being handed over to Bangladesh.
