Amtali police detained two women from Bangladesh and a child near Agartala Railway Station on Saturday following suspicions that they had entered India illegally.
According to police sources, the incident came to light during a routine patrol in the railway station area. A police team led by Sub-Inspector Ruma Jamatia noticed the two women and the child standing in front of a nearby hotel under suspicious circumstances. Upon questioning, the women reportedly disclosed their Bangladeshi nationality.
The police subsequently brought them to Amtali police station before handing them over to the appropriate authorities for further legal action. They have reportedly been shifted to Narsingarh Home, where they are currently staying pending further proceedings.
Sources further claimed that the trio had previously been arrested by Hyderabad Police and brought to Tripura for the process of repatriation to Bangladesh. However, they allegedly re-entered India and intended to travel to Hyderabad by train. The circumstances surrounding their alleged re-entry are yet to be independently confirmed.
The incident has once again drawn attention to concerns over unauthorised cross-border movement along the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura. Allegations have persisted that certain unfenced stretches of the international boundary are being exploited by suspected touts to facilitate the movement of people into India and onward to other states.
The role of some vehicle operators around Agartala Railway Station has also come under scrutiny amid allegations that they may be assisting such movements. However, these claims require verification by the investigating authorities.
Further action in the case will depend on the outcome of the ongoing legal process. Whether the detained individuals will be repatriated to Bangladesh remains to be decided by the competent authorities.
