The counting of votes for the by-election in the 56-Dharmanagar Assembly Constituency will take place on May 4, beginning at 8:00 AM. The process will be conducted at the PM SHRI Dharmanagar Government Girls Higher Secondary School, where authorities have completed all necessary preparations, including tight security arrangements, to ensure a smooth and orderly procedure.
The by-poll, held on April 9, witnessed a strong voter turnout of 80.04 percent. However, the polling process was not without controversy. Opposition parties raised allegations of irregularities, intimidation, and tension at multiple polling stations. Congress candidate Chayan Bhattacharjee questioned a sudden spike in voting toward the end of polling hours and alleged that party agents were forcibly removed from booths. Similar concerns were voiced by CPI(M) candidate Amitabha Dutta, who claimed that Left polling agents were expelled and criticized the authorities for inadequate security measures.
On the other hand, BJP candidate Jahar Chakraborty described the election as peaceful and praised voters for their enthusiastic participation.
Polling was conducted across 55 booths under strict security arrangements. A total of 46,142 voters, including 23,758 women, were eligible to vote and determine the outcome among six candidates representing BJP, Congress, the CPI(M)-led Left Front, Amra Bangali, SUCI, and an Independent contender.
The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting MLA and Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen in December 2025.
To maintain order during the counting process, the District Magistrate and District Election Officer of North Tripura has imposed restrictions within a 100-metre radius of the counting centre under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. These restrictions will be in force from 6:00 AM on May 4 until the completion of counting. Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will invite legal action under Section 223 of the BNSS, 2023.
