The Jal Jeevan Mission project, aimed at providing safe drinking water to every household in the country, appears to be facing setbacks in the West Kanchanmala area under West District.
Despite the government’s efforts to ensure piped water supply through pumps installed in both urban and rural areas, residents of this locality are struggling to access water.
A government pump was installed near the Kanchanmala SB School under the Dukli and D Block jurisdiction, costing a significant amount to bring water to local residents via pipelines.
The responsibility of operating and maintaining this pump was assigned to Deepak Roy, son of local resident Ranjan Roy.
However, residents allege that Deepak Roy is running the pump arbitrarily, operating it for less than an hour at a time before shutting it down. For the past 8–10 days, the pump has remained out of service due to reported mechanical faults, leaving residents without access to drinking water. People claim that even minimal daily water supply of two hours could have mitigated their daily struggles.
Local residents have repeatedly raised complaints with Deepak Roy, but they say their concerns have been ignored. The community holds the operator responsible for the disruption and has called on the state government and the DWS (Drinking Water Supply) Department to take urgent action. They demand that any mechanical issues be promptly repaired and that the operator be instructed to ensure a minimum two-hour daily water supply for all households.
The public now awaits the response of the authorities following these complaints, hoping that swift measures will restore access to drinking water in the area.
