Workers affiliated with the Bharatiya Janata Mazdoor Sangh staged a protest demonstration in front of the TFDPC office on Saturday against the proposed retrenchment of nearly 200 labourers.
Later, a delegation from the organisation submitted a memorandum containing four demands to the Managing Director.
According to one of the union leaders, notices were recently sent to various centres directing the removal of several workers. He alleged that many of those included in the retrenchment list had been serving the organisation for the past 10 to 20 years. The sudden decision to terminate them without assigning any reason was termed unjust and unacceptable.
The protesting workers demanded that if any labourer is to be laid off, the organisation must provide financial compensation based on the workers’ monthly salaries and their years of service.
The workers also renewed their demand for the introduction of a “Rainy Day Allowance” for labourers.
In addition, the organisation demanded that 70 percent of future recruitment in the company should be made from among skilled workers. The protesters further urged the authorities to remove unnecessary and overaged employees from offices and various centres to create employment opportunities for educated youth.
