Tripura launches intensive Aadhaar enrolment drive for children aged 0–5 Years; 34% coverage achieved

With an estimated 2.87 lakh children in the 0–5 year age group, Tripura is preparing for an intensive Aadhaar enrolment drive to increase coverage among its youngest residents. Currently, only around 98,000 children—approximately 34 percent—have been issued Aadhaar cards, slightly trailing the national average of 38 percent.

In a press release, the state government announced that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has entrusted the Health and Family Welfare Department with the responsibility of speeding up enrolment efforts.

To support this mission, UIDAI has sanctioned funds for 138 Child Enrolment Lite Client (CELC) kits, which were officially handed over on April 22 in the presence of Health and Family Welfare Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director of Health Rights Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Majumdar, and senior UIDAI officials.

The department is now preparing to roll out training sessions for Aadhaar operators across the state. Region-wise training for shortlisted candidates is scheduled to commence in the first week of May. Once trained, these operators will be stationed at district hospitals, social health centres, primary health centres, and birth registration units to facilitate the enrolment process.

Officials have set a three-month timeline to begin the large-scale registration, aiming to significantly improve coverage and ensure seamless access to government services linked with Aadhaar.
