The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) will begin an eviction drive from February 3 against individuals and traders illegally running businesses by encroaching on public land within Agartala city.
The move is part of a broader plan to streamline urban development, ease traffic congestion, and enhance cleanliness.
Traders operating without valid AMC documents at Battala Howrah Market have been directed to vacate the area by February 7. Failing compliance, AMC will carry out a separate eviction drive at Howrah Market starting February 8.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the AMC conference hall, chaired by Agartala Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder. The meeting was attended by AMC corporators, the Municipal Commissioner, and officials from the Traffic Department, Task Force, Public Works Department (PWD), and Agartala Smart City authorities.
Addressing a press conference, Mayor Majumder said Agartala is experiencing rapid population growth, rising traffic pressure, and increased commercial activity. Keeping the next 20 years in mind, AMC has prepared a comprehensive plan for systematic urban development. He added that the state government has initiated steps to develop Agartala, Dharmanagar, and Udaipur as satellite towns, and a proposal for constructing another flyover in Agartala is under consideration.
To improve drainage, three new pump sets will be installed at Shakuntala Road, Ramnagar Road No. 4, and near Satsangha Ashram. The Mayor said strict action will be taken against businesses operating outside vending zones and vehicles parked in non-designated areas. Only licensed vendors with movable pushcarts measuring 6×4 feet will be allowed to operate till 11 PM.
Restaurants, hotels, and food stalls built over covered drains will be removed to ensure pedestrian movement. AMC will also act against unauthorized advertisements displayed without government approval. Meanwhile, several development projects under AMC and allied departments are nearing completion, with safeguards planned for underground utilities during road construction.
