Tension flared on Monday morning in the North Kalamchoura–Barmura area of Sepahijala district when an anti-ganja operation was carried out by a joint team of the Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force (BSF).
According to allegations, during the operation local ganja cultivators surrounded the joint forces from all sides and launched a violent attack using sharp weapons, bricks, and stones. As a result of the assault, four Assam Rifles personnel sustained injuries.
A police constable, Suman Majumder, suffered a head injury after being struck during the clash.
To bring the situation under control, personnel of the BSF and Assam Rifles were compelled to fire around 40 rounds into the air. However, the aggressive cultivators reportedly did not retreat despite the warning shots.
As the situation became increasingly volatile, the joint forces were forced to withdraw from the area. The injured personnel were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sources stated that this period marks the time when ganja cultivators usually collect dried ganja. It is alleged that to prevent the dried ganja from being seized by the authorities, the cultivators launched a coordinated attack on the joint forces.
Following the incident, local residents believe that Monday’s anti-ganja operation by the central joint forces ended in failure due to the intense resistance faced on the ground.
