In a groundbreaking medical achievement, the Cardiology Department of AGMC & GBP Hospital has successfully implanted its first leadless pacemaker, offering new hope and healing to a critically ill 71-year-old patient.
The coin-sized device, placed directly inside the heart without surgical incisions or leads, marks a significant advancement in the hospital’s cardiac care capabilities.
The patient, admitted in an extremely critical condition, was suffering from complete heart block, intraparenchymal hemorrhage, severe traumatic brain injury, and septic shock—conditions that demanded highly specialized and coordinated emergency care. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, experts from Emergency Medicine, Neurosurgery, Medicine ICU, and Cardiology joined forces to stabilize the patient over several days.
To address the life-threatening cardiac rhythm disturbance, the Cardiology Department performed the institution’s first implantation of a leadless pacemaker. Unlike traditional pacemakers—which require surgical cuts in the chest and wires connecting the device to the heart—this miniature device is inserted through a vein and positioned directly inside the heart. The technique significantly reduces the risk of infection and ensures faster recovery.
Following the procedure, the patient has shown remarkable improvement and is currently stable, signaling a successful outcome to this high-risk intervention.
A senior cardiologist emphasized the importance of innovative thinking in critical care, saying, “Managing such patients requires moving beyond conventional approaches. This success reflects the commitment, skill, and teamwork of every department involved. It is truly a proud moment for the medical community.”
This milestone not only showcases the hospital’s medical excellence but also opens new horizons in treating severe cardiac conditions with fewer complications and faster healing.
The hospital leadership extended heartfelt gratitude to all professionals involved in this life-saving mission.
The medical team included:
Dr. Anindya Sundar Trivedi (Assistant Professor & Consultant Cardiologist, In-Charge, Cardiology Department)
Dr. Rakesh Das (Consultant Cardiologist, Cardiology Department)
