Women in Pandabpur village, under the Madhupur police station area, took matters into their own hands late Friday night by catching an alleged illegal liquor seller after weeks of growing frustration. The man, identified as Uttam Das, was reportedly caught around 10 PM with a significant quantity of alcohol in his possession.
Residents, especially women supported by local youths, had been keeping watch in the Schooltilla locality due to ongoing disturbances caused by people consuming illicit liquor. After apprehending him, they handed Das over to Amtali police. Authorities also detained another individual present at the spot and seized the liquor.
Locals say illegal alcohol sales have continued despite repeated complaints and warnings. Earlier, the community had even held a meeting, deciding that anyone caught selling liquor would face fines and social humiliation. However, residents claim that several such operations are still active, with Das believed to be a key figure. His family, they allege, has a history linked to this trade.
The incident highlights rising anger among villagers, particularly women’s groups, who have been leading efforts against illegal liquor sales. They are now demanding stronger police action to ensure strict punishment and to prevent offenders from returning to the business.
