Tension escalated at the West District Consumer Court today following serious allegations against the court’s President and presiding judge, Gautam Sarkar. Court employees have accused him of regularly coming to the office under the influence of alcohol and allegedly attending court sessions in an intoxicated state.
According to the complaints, Judge Sarkar frequently appears at the court under the influence and even consumes alcohol in his chambers. Employees claim that, while intoxicated, he mistreats office staff—a practice they say has been ongoing for years. The matter came to light recently, prompting outrage among court staff and lawyers.
The situation at the court intensified today, prompting Police from NCC police station to arrive at the scene to maintain order. A section of the employees and lawyers demanded the immediate removal of Judge Sarkar from his position.
Lawyers have stated that such behavior from a consumer court judge is unacceptable and undermines the dignity of the judiciary. They have called for an impartial investigation and appropriate action against the judge.
Meanwhile, Judge Gautam Sarkar, speaking to the media, denied all allegations, describing them as “false and orchestrated.” He asserted that there is no basis for the claims and said he is being collectively harassed. Sarkar also mentioned his health issues, including undergoing bypass surgery, and emphasized that he is aware of all rules and regulations and would never engage in unreasonable behavior such as drinking alcohol within his office.
The controversy has sparked widespread attention, and calls for an independent inquiry into the matter are growing louder.
