During the 21st State Conference of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) in Tripura, CPI(M) Politburo member and opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury made explosive allegations against the ruling BJP government, claiming that drug trafficking in the state is growing unchecked.

Chowdhury stated that drug trade is flourishing right under the administration’s nose, while the government is playing the role of a silent spectator. He contrasted the current situation with the past, saying, “Earlier, only 2–4 bottles of drugs were seized. Now, entire wagons of contraband are entering the state under the present government.”

Highlighting the broader impact on society, the opposition leader accused the ruling party of fostering unemployment and lawlessness, pushing the youth toward drug abuse. He alleged that this is a deliberate attempt to destroy the younger generation, exploiting unemployment to lure them into drugs. “The government could stop this trade if it had the will, but clearly, it lacks any determination,” he added.

Chowdhury went further to make a serious allegation, claiming that more than half of those caught in drug-related cases are closely linked to top leaders of the ruling party. He cited the names of Rajiv Bhattacharya, Sunil Deodhar, and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, questioning why so many of the accused have their photos with these leaders.

He also accused authorities of shielding major drug traffickers while arresting only minor players, urging the government to conduct an impartial, high-level investigation into the matter.

Issuing a stern warning, Chowdhury said that if strict anti-drug operations are not launched immediately, the opposition will be compelled to organize a wider movement.

The conference was attended by Jitendra Chowdhury, All India General Secretary Mariam Dhawale, and several state and national leaders of the All India Democratic Women’s Association.
