In a remarkable achievement for the healthcare sector of Tripura, the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital successfully carried out the fourth consecutive kidney transplant in the state.

This milestone has been possible due to the visionary leadership and sincere efforts of Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha, alongside the dedicated teamwork of highly skilled doctors, surgeons, and medical staff.

On this occasion, a 23-year-old youth from Rabindrapalli, West Taranagar, under Sidhai Mohanpur subdivision, underwent a successful kidney transplant after his 45-year-old mother courageously stepped forward to donate one of her kidneys to save her son’s life. This act of selfless love by the mother stands as an inspiring example of sacrifice and resilience.

The procedure was conducted by a joint team of expert doctors from Sija Hospital and Research Institute, Manipur, and AGMC & GBP Hospital. Both the donor and the recipient are reported to be in stable condition following the surgery and are under careful medical observation.

The transplant surgery brought together a multidisciplinary team of specialists. From AGMC & GBP Hospital, the core medical team included Consultant Nephrologist Dr. Manas Gop, Dr. Samaresh Pal, Dr. Reshmi Das (Nephrologist), and Dr. Udayan Saha (Nephrologist). The expertise of Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon Dr. Soumorendra Pounam and Dr. Maharabam Mahili from Sija Hospital was instrumental in ensuring the success of the transplant.

Supporting them from AGMC’s Urology Department were Dr. Mukut Debnath, Dr. Bijit Lodh, and Dr. Jiban Debnath, while the critical role of anesthesia was carried out by Dr. Kajal G. Momin and Dr. Gayatri S. Pillai from Sija Hospital, along with Dr. Bhaskar Majumder, Dr. Ranjit Riang, and Dr. Tapan Debbarma from AGMC.

In addition to the medical specialists, the transplant was supported by a dedicated team of OT nurses, floor nurses, and OT technicians who ensured seamless coordination throughout the procedure. The transplant coordinator Himadri Kar and Senior Nursing Officer Tapati Chakraborty, who was the overall supervisor, played crucial roles in managing the process with precision and efficiency.

According to a press release issued by the Health Department, this fourth consecutive successful kidney transplant is a testimony to the growing medical expertise of Tripura and marks a major advancement in the state’s healthcare infrastructure. The development has not only boosted confidence among patients and families seeking advanced treatment within the state but has also positioned AGMC & GBP Hospital as a regional hub for organ transplant services in the Northeast.

Officials emphasized that this achievement would not have been possible without the state government’s commitment to improving healthcare facilities. Chief Minister Professor (Dr) Manik Saha’s persistent efforts have paved the way for advanced medical procedures like organ transplants to be carried out in Tripura, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the state for such critical treatments.

With four successful kidney transplants completed in quick succession, Tripura has taken a significant step forward in offering life-saving medical procedures to its people. This success story is expected to inspire further advancements and set a strong foundation for specialized healthcare in the state.
