The last rites of former Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Biswabandhu Sen, were performed with full state honours today at Dharmanagar.

The mortal remains of the late Speaker reached his residence in Dharmanagar on Saturday night. Several dignitaries, including Minister for Industries and Commerce Santana Chakma, North Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Aparna Nath, and Dharmanagar Municipal Council Chairperson Mitali Rani Das Sen, paid their last respects at his residence the same night.

On Sunday morning, the mortal remains were first taken to the Ramthakur Ashram. From there, a solemn funeral procession passed through various streets of Dharmanagar town. During the procession, people from all walks of life—social workers, artists, poets, writers, theatre personalities, and a large number of common citizens—paid floral tributes to the departed leader.

Later, the body was taken to the Dharmanagar cremation ground, where further tributes were offered by Minister Santana Chakma, Chief Whip of the Legislative Assembly Kalyani Saha Roy, Sabhadhipati Aparna Nath, MLAs Binay Bhushan Das and Jadablal Debnath, Chairperson Mitali Rani Das Sen, District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, Superintendent of Police Sudhambika R, Additional District Magistrate Bijoy Sinha, Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Debbarma, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dharmanagar Debjani Chowdhury, social workers Kajal Kumar Das and Shyamal Nath, chairpersons of various Panchayat Samitis, Wakf Board Chairman Mabswar Ali, former MLA Malina Debnath, members of the North Tripura Zilla Parishad, and other district administration officials.

Following the tribute ceremony, a joint contingent of the Tripura Police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) accorded a gun salute in honour of the departed Speaker.

It may be recalled that Biswabandhu Sen passed away on December 26 at a hospital in Bengaluru.
