A devastating fire tore through Panisagar market late last night, leaving behind a trail of destruction and pushing the local community into shock. Within minutes, the flames engulfed several establishments, completely reducing seven to eight shops to ashes.
Initial assessments reveal financial losses running into several lakhs, with total damages potentially exceeding one crore rupees. According to local accounts, the fire spread with alarming speed, leaving shop owners and residents little time to save their belongings.
Upon receiving reports of the blaze, fire service teams sprang into action. Four fire engines—two from Panisagar, one from Dharmanagar, and one from Pecharthal in Unakoti district—fought the inferno for nearly two to three hours before finally bringing it under control. Their efforts, supported by local residents, were crucial in preventing the fire from spreading further.
The cause of the incident remains unknown, and authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the fire started.
A cloud of fear and sorrow now hangs over the Panisagar area as residents come to terms with the loss. This morning, Panisagar SDM S. Debbarma and local MLA Binay Bhushan Das visited the affected site to inspect the damage. Following their assessment, they announced that the administration is considering providing initial financial assistance of Rs 1,01,000 to each affected shop owner. The MLA also stated that further relief measures will be discussed with the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, police and fire service officials continue their investigation to uncover the cause of the devastating blaze.
