The Haora Market in Botatola, Agartala, long known for illicit trade and anti-social activities, was cleared by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Sunday. The move is part of a broader initiative to develop a riverside amusement park along the Haora River, with officials citing concerns that the market could disrupt the experience for future visitors.

Business owners were given a deadline of February 7 to remove their equipment, and some complied. Early Sunday, AMC officials deployed bulldozers to begin the demolition. AMC Mayor Deepak Majumdar, who inspected the site, stated that the area is slated to be redeveloped into a modern market in the near future.

Mayor Majumdar clarified that only traders with valid licenses will be allowed to operate in the new facility. For those already following AMC regulations, rehabilitation measures are being considered. He stressed that the corporation’s focus is on public welfare and that no obstructions to city development will be tolerated.

Reflecting on past experiences, the mayor noted that during the construction of Agartala’s flyovers, thousands of traders were evicted without proper rehabilitation. Many had resorted to approaching courts and political parties to claim their rights, which delayed assistance. In contrast, the current administration seeks active cooperation from vendors to maintain cleanliness and order in the city.

Looking ahead, the future Haora Market will operate under strict regulations. Liquor shops, gambling, and other illegal activities will be prohibited, with close monitoring to ensure compliance. The demolition and inspection were conducted in coordination with the municipal commissioner and the AMC task force.
