The Tripura Police, along with the Crime Branch, on Wednesday destroyed a large consignment of banned cough syrups valued at Rs 1.25 crore. The narcotics were seized in July this year and disposed of following a court order.
IG Crime Branch Avula Ramesh Reddy, IPS, who heads the High-Level Drug Destruction Committee, supervised the destruction.
He said the case originated in Ambassa under Dhalai district and was later transferred to the Crime Branch for further investigation.
“The case was registered in July, and over 59,000 bottles of Eskuf banned cough syrup were seized. After receiving the court’s directive, we are destroying the entire consignment in an open area. Several investigations are still underway against NDPS smugglers. Tripura Police is committed to ensuring a Nesha Mukt Tripura. The market value of the seized items is Rs 1.25 crore,” he said.
Highlighting ongoing anti-drug initiatives, the IG said that under Prayas Abhiyan, the police are conducting awareness programmes in schools, colleges, and various other institutions.
“We have toll-free number 112 for any type of complaint. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and helpline 1933 are also available for sharing information related to drug peddling. Strict action will be taken on all such inputs. Several initiatives are underway in coordination with the NCB, Ministry of Social Welfare and Justice, and the Tripura Health Department,” he added.
He further stressed that school-going students are at high risk of drug-related victimization and urged parents, teachers, youth, and the government to work collectively to prevent such incidents. “The law against drug peddling is very stringent. The youth must not fall prey to such activities,” he said.
