A major road accident occurred near Bagmara Hospital Chowmuhani on the Sabroom–Agartala National Highway, leaving seven people injured after a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and two passenger autorickshaws.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place when an autorickshaw carrying six elderly passengers, who were reportedly on their way from Palatana and Shalgara to attend a Baishnav religious service, collided head-on with a speeding motorcycle.
Moments later, another passenger autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction also crashed into the first auto, causing a chain reaction that led to chaos at the busy intersection.
Local residents and passersby immediately alerted the authorities, and firefighters rushed to the scene to rescue the injured. The victims were quickly taken to the Gomati District Hospital for emergency treatment.
Medical officials at the hospital confirmed that among the seven injured, two individuals sustained critical injuries. “Both of them suffered severe head and limb injuries and were referred to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala after receiving initial medical attention,” a doctor at the Gomati District Hospital said. The remaining five victims are undergoing treatment at the district hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.
Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Preliminary reports suggest that reckless driving and overspeeding may have played a role. The damaged vehicles have been removed from the road to restore traffic flow, which had been disrupted for nearly an hour after the incident.
Residents in the area have expressed concern over the rising number of accidents along the Sabroom–Agartala highway, citing poor road discipline and lack of enforcement of traffic rules. They have urged authorities to increase monitoring and take necessary safety measures to prevent further mishaps.
The incident has once again raised questions about road safety and the urgent need for stricter traffic regulations in the state.
