Tripura Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha today emphasized the need to transform the College of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry at RK Nagar into one of the best institutions in the country.

He also highlighted Tripura’s remarkable progress in livestock and dairy production, noting that the state currently ranks second in the North Eastern region in milk production.

Speaking at the 17th Foundation Day celebration of the college, Dr. Saha said that Tripura must aim for self-sufficiency in milk and egg production in the coming years. “This veterinary college, in terms of infrastructure, is on par with other medical college hospitals. Veterinary science is even more complex than human science, and students have to study extensively,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister mentioned that he regularly reviews the status of the college and has prioritized addressing faculty shortages. “Earlier, Tripura had only one or two seats in veterinary studies. Today, this institution has expanded significantly, with around 66 seats,” he said.

Dr. Saha underlined the crucial role of livestock in rural development, stating that India holds a major share of the global livestock sector. “This college should be developed as a model institution in the country so that students and faculty can take pride in it. In the era of AI and 5G, it’s vital for both teachers and students to stay updated with modern advancements,” he added.

Highlighting the state’s achievements, the Chief Minister said Tripura now leads the North East in per capita egg availability and is self-sufficient in meat production.

“We are in a good position in milk, eggs, and meat. Our goal now is to become fully self-sufficient in milk and egg production. The government, along with all stakeholders, must work together to achieve this,” he said.

Dr. Saha also informed that the Green Animal Food Development Project is being implemented, with green fodder cultivation underway on about 286 hectares of land. Additionally, duck and poultry farming initiatives have begun under the Chief Minister’s Animal Resources Scheme.

Announcing a major healthcare project, Dr. Saha said a SHIJA Super Specialty Hospital will soon be established near RK Nagar. “Most likely, I will lay the foundation stone for this hospital on November 5. Once completed, it will attract people from across the region,” he said.

The Chief Minister concluded by expressing his vision of making the veterinary college an institution recognized not only across India but also globally.
