Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha today said that the state government is laying special emphasis on developing sports infrastructure and urged players to take full advantage of the opportunities being created.
He said the government is considering providing jobs on the basis of players’ achievements on the field, and not just academic degrees.
“Along with studies, children should also be actively involved in sports,” he said.
Dr. Saha was speaking at the state-level National Sports Day 2025 celebration organised at the Dashrath Dev State Sports Complex in Badharghat, Agartala.
“Every year, on August 29, we celebrate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand as National Sports Day. As a hockey player, he brought glory to India at the international level. Honouring his contribution, the Government of India decided to mark this day as National Sports Day. Accordingly, the occasion is being observed with due dignity in Tripura under the initiative of the Youth Affairs and Sports Department. Major Dhyan Chand is a shining example of how far effort and dedication can take a person,” the Chief Minister said.
Asserting that there is no dearth of sporting talent in Tripura, Dr. Saha said, “Children from our state are making a mark at national and international levels in gymnastics, athletics, swimming and other disciplines. We want them to excel further. The government is developing infrastructure to support them, and they must make the best use of it. Serious practice, self-belief, and discipline are key to success. Only then can they grow into accomplished athletes.”
He said that unlike in the past, athletes in Tripura are now receiving due recognition.
“After the BJP-led government came to power in 2018, several initiatives were launched for sportspersons, including the Mukhyamantri Krira Unnayan Prakalpa, Mukhyamantri Sports Talent Search, and etc,” he said.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the need for continuous innovation in coaching.
“If a player succeeds, credit also goes to the coach. But the most important thing for players is to maintain discipline, avoid distractions, and remain focused. Mental and physical strength, along with concentration, are essential for success. The present government is also giving weightage to sporting achievements while considering employment opportunities,” he added.
