Teacher Shortage Sparks Student Protest, Road Blockade in Khowai

A prolonged teacher shortage at West Rajnagar English Medium School triggered a protest by students and parents on Monday, with the agitating students blocking the Chebri–Tulashikhar main road under Khowai District and disrupting traffic for several hours.

The students took to the streets demanding immediate steps to address the shortage of teachers at the school. According to parents and local residents, the institution has a significant number of students from the nursery to primary sections, but only three teachers are currently available to conduct classes.

The shortage has reportedly affected regular academic activities at the school for a considerable period. Parents alleged that despite repeated concerns, the issue has not been resolved, prompting the students to stage the road blockade.

The protest resulted in long queues of vehicles on both sides of the road, causing considerable inconvenience to commuters and local residents.

Parents also raised concerns over the shortage of teaching staff at the nearby West Rajnagar High School, claiming that the problem has persisted there for a long time as well.

Administrative officials reached the spot after receiving information about the blockade and held discussions with the students, parents and other protesters. Officials assured them that necessary steps would be taken to provide adequate teachers and address the issue.

Following the assurance, the students withdrew the blockade, and traffic movement gradually returned to normal.

However, parents and local residents said they would continue to monitor the situation and warned of a stronger agitation if the teacher shortage is not resolved within a reasonable timeframe.
