Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Monday announced that the state will soon have three new Tripura Bhavans in Dwarka (Delhi), Mumbai, and Telangana, aimed at easing accommodation difficulties faced by people from the state while travelling outside Tripura.
The Chief Minister made the announcement after laying the foundation stone for the Extension Project of Tripura Bhavan at Bir Tikendrajit Marg, New Delhi. Under the project, six additional rooms and two hall rooms will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 2.95 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Saha recalled the long-standing accommodation challenges faced by people from Tripura in the national capital.
“During our school and college days, we visited Delhi several times, but there was a severe lack of accommodation. Often, rooms were unavailable unless one belonged to a particular political party. Many had to stay in rented places that were highly insecure,” he said.
Highlighting the growing demand for accommodation, the Chief Minister said a large number of people from Tripura travel to Delhi for education, medical treatment, and official purposes, resulting in a shortage of space at existing Tripura Bhavans.
“I visited both Tripura Bhavans at Kautilya Marg and Tikendrajit Marg. Due to security restrictions, buildings cannot be constructed very high. However, after identifying available space and consulting officials, we decided to extend the existing structure to benefit the people of Tripura,” Dr. Saha said.
He informed that the first Tripura Bhavan was established in Kautilya Marg in 1981, while the second building at Tikendrajit Marg was extended in 2002. Currently, the Bhavan has 24 rooms and a large hall, which is being used as a dormitory.
Dr. Saha further revealed plans for a new Tripura Bhavan in Dwarka, where approximately 3,000 square metres of land has been identified for the construction of a modern facility with around 60 rooms.
“The drawing and design are ready, and a few clearances are pending. Once completed, it will have modern infrastructure,” he said.
The Chief Minister also stated that construction of a Tripura Bhavan in Mumbai is already underway. Land has been purchased close to major hospitals, considering the large number of patients from Tripura who visit the city for medical treatment. Additionally, land has been sanctioned for the construction of a Tripura Bhavan in Telangana.
Dr. Saha said that the North Eastern region, including Tripura, is witnessing rapid development across sectors, attributing this progress to the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The foundation-laying ceremony was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly Ramprasad Pal, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma, Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, MLA Bhagaban Das, CRC Manoj Kumar, and several other dignitaries.
