The incumbent Chairman of the Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC), Retired Colonel Kush Kumar Sharma, has resigned on Tuesday following the intervention of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, as he was accused of making insulting remarks against Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, creating a ruckus in public, and harassing on-duty police personnel at a hotel on December 28 last.
The resignation came after Colonel Sharma was detained for allegedly creating a ruckus under the influence of alcohol at a city hotel where the 2nd Tripura Diaspora Summit was being held.
According to police sources, the incident occurred late December 28 around 11 p.m. when Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury was leaving the hotel after attending the summit. Colonel Sharma, accompanied by his son, was allegedly intoxicated and obstructed the minister’s convoy by parking his vehicle at the hotel entrance. Despite repeated requests from the minister’s security personnel, the vehicle was not moved, leading to a heated altercation.
Police stated that Colonel Sharma’s son was found in a half-dressed condition and allegedly abused the Tourism Minister and the people of Tripura using foul language. Colonel Sharma himself is accused of verbally abusing Minister Chowdhury when asked to cooperate with security arrangements.
The situation escalated further when Colonel Sharma’s wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law allegedly threatened on-duty police officers with dire consequences. The seriousness of the disturbance prompted senior officials, including IGP (Intelligence) Krishnendu Chakaravoti, SP (West) Namit Pathak, and OC of West Agartala Police Station Rana Chatterjee, to rush to the spot to bring the situation under control.
Colonel Sharma was detained and later released early Monday morning on a personal bond after undergoing medical examination. Police confirmed that the incident involved interference with public servants performing official duties.
The episode has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with many terming it a shameful act that tarnished Tripura’s image at a time when the state was hosting an international diaspora event. The presence of senior officials and delegates during the summit has further intensified concerns over the damage caused to the state’s reputation.
Following the incident, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha took a firm stand and sought Colonel Sharma’s resignation, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining discipline, accountability, and the dignity of constitutional institutions.
An investigation into the matter is ongoing, and police have stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the findings.
