The Tripura Students’ Federation (TSF) and Tipra Indigenous Students’ Society (TISF) have called for a statewide mass movement on January 8 demanding the use of the Roman script for the Kokborok language.

Ahead of the proposed agitation, the student and youth organizations held a press conference today to outline their demands and protest plans.

Addressing the media, leaders of TSF and TISF stated that the demand for the Roman script in Kokborok is a long-standing one and cannot be ignored any longer. They alleged that despite repeated assurances from the government, no concrete steps have been taken so far to resolve the issue.

The leaders pointed out that a statewide march organized earlier in support of the Roman script demand received overwhelming public response, reflecting the strong sentiments of the people. They said the time has now come to launch a more intense movement to press for their rightful demand.

According to the organizations, the demand for the Roman script is not merely about a writing system but is deeply linked to the cultural identity and rights of the indigenous community. They warned that if the government fails to accept the demand immediately, a series of sustained agitations would be launched across the state.

TSF and TISS leaders further announced that on January 8, protests, rallies, and mass demonstrations will be held in various districts of Tripura to mount pressure on the government. While assuring that the movement will remain peaceful, they also cautioned that the agitation would be intensified if the government continues to remain unresponsive.
