The Tripura Civil Society (TCS), which has called for a 24-hour bandh on October 23, announced that it will organize picketing across 25 locations in the state to press for its key demands, including action against illegal infiltration, implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system, and execution of the Tiprasa Accord.
Speaking to reporters, TCS leader and Tipra Motha Party MLA Ranjit Debbarma said that the picketing will take place across all districts, with three major sites identified in Agartala — near the Circuit House, in front of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, and at the North Gate.
“The final list of locations will be finalized by this evening. So far, we have planned picketing in 25 areas, including Kanchanpur, Panisagar, Hatai Kotor, and other districts. The number may increase as we are receiving numerous calls from people eager to participate and support the bandh,” Debbarma said.
He added that Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, royal scion and founder of the Tipra Motha Party, has held multiple discussions with both the Tripura and Central governments on the community’s long-pending demands.
“The Central government had signed the Tiprasa Accord but has yet to implement it. We were even compelled to approach the Supreme Court to conduct village committee elections. Around 38 bills passed by the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) were sent to the state government, but not a single one has been cleared. It has been 18 months since the agreement, and yet there has been no action. The government’s silence has forced us to call this bandh,” Debbarma said.
Raising the issue of illegal infiltration, he alleged that the state continues to witness frequent cases of illegal entry from Bangladesh. “Recently, 24 Bangladeshi nationals were detained. Such incidents happen almost every day. The government must take strong measures against illegal immigrants residing in Tripura,” he added.
Debbarma warned that if the government fails to respond to their demands, the Civil Society will intensify its agitation in the coming days.
