Senior Congress MLA and former minister Sudip Roy Barman has sharply criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing it of attempting to exploit the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll for partisan advantage.

Speaking at a gathering of party workers in Noagaon under the 6–Agartala Assembly Constituency, Barman urged Booth Level Officers across Tripura to resist any pressure that could compromise the integrity of voter list verification.

He cited instances from other states—such as Maharashtra, Haryana, and Bihar—where, according to him, glaring discrepancies were detected in electoral rolls, including excessively repeated entries and large-scale duplication of voter names. Such problems, he stressed, must not be permitted in Tripura.

Barman clarified that legitimate corrections—such as removing the names of deceased individuals or ineligible non-citizens—are acceptable. However, he warned that fabricated or artificially multiplied entries would be met with firm opposition.

The Congress leader reminded BLOs that Tripura’s compact geographical size and closely linked communities make fraudulent activity more easily traceable.
He cautioned that those found engaging in deliberate manipulation under political influence could face severe administrative and legal consequences, including termination of employment.

Barman further alleged that attempts to distort the voter list to benefit the BJP or Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be resisted both politically and legally. He emphasized that the Election Commission of India carries the ultimate responsibility for maintaining a fair and transparent electoral system.

Calling on Congress members to remain alert during the SIR process, he labeled the current administration as deeply corrupt and accused it of systematically misusing bureaucratic mechanisms to maintain power.

With the election season approaching, Barman’s statements mark an escalation in the Congress’s rhetoric as it challenges what it claims are organized efforts to tamper with democratic processes in Tripura.
