Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury today emphasized the importance of a safe and well-planned road network for the overall development of Tripura, stating that economic progress and improved connectivity depend heavily on the timely expansion of national highways.

Speaking after a high-level review meeting held at the State Secretariat, the Minister said, “Our government’s goal is to complete the work of expanding the national highway within the stipulated time for the overall development of the state, modernization of the road communication system, and convenience of the people.”

The meeting focused on expediting the ongoing expansion and development of the Assam–Agartala National Highway (NH-8)—specifically the stretch from Ranir Bazar Fire Station in Majlishpur Vidhan Sabha to the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) in Madhavbari. The project involves upgrading the existing four-lane corridor, an infrastructure priority for the state.

Key officials, including Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Public Works Department, representatives from the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and senior architects and engineers of the PWD (National Highways), attended the meeting. NHIDCL officials presented a detailed PowerPoint report on the project’s progress and existing challenges, particularly related to land acquisition.

Minister Chowdhury directed all concerned departments to identify obstacles on a priority basis and take immediate steps to resolve them. “I urge all officials to overcome existing problems quickly and ensure that the project is completed within the specified timeframe,” he said.

The NH-8 expansion is expected to significantly boost Tripura’s connectivity, ease vehicular movement, and support long-term economic growth across the region.
