The Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has taken note of allegations of prolonged ragging at the boys’ hostel of Anandanagar Dr. B.R. Ambedkar English Medium School in West Tripura District.

The commission has directed the Director of School Education, Government of Tripura, to conduct a detailed inquiry and submit a report within one month.

According to the THRC order, signed by Chairperson Justice Arindam Lodh, the hostel once accommodated around 100 students but now houses only 22. It is alleged that continuous ragging over the past year has led several parents to withdraw their children.

The order cites a recent complaint from the guardian of a Class-VII student who was reportedly subjected to physical abuse and harassment. The complaint claims that senior students of Class-XI and Class-XII demanded money—including 600 rupees from the Class-VII student—and resorted to physical punishment if the demands were not met. A similar incident had allegedly occurred six months prior.

In the latest case, the student contacted his guardian via the hostel security guard’s phone, claiming he was being denied food and physically tortured. The child’s mother reportedly rushed to the school upon learning of the situation.

Hostel Superintendent Rajesh Debbarma has denied the allegations, stating that there was only a dispute with a Class-XII student, which has since been resolved.

The THRC has scheduled the next hearing for January 8, 2026, and awaits the inquiry report from the Director of School Education.
