A press conference organized by the Tripura Irregular Employees’ Forum was held on Sunday at the Agartala Press Club. Senior advocate and convenor of the forum, Purushottam Ray Barman, presented the main address. Joint convenors Ratan Debnath, Mrinmoy Chakraborty, Kaushik Nath, and other members were also present.
Speakers at the press meet alleged that the state government's continued silence on the legitimate demands of irregular employees was “undemocratic and deeply concerning.”
They noted that on July 4, the forum had conducted the historic Mahakaran Abhiyan and submitted an eight-point charter of demands to the Chief Secretary. Although the Chief Secretary reportedly expressed agreement and assured positive steps, the organization claimed that four months had passed without any progress.
The leaders further stated that remarks made by the Finance Minister during the recent Assembly session had intensified frustration among irregular employees. A reminder letter was sent on September 18, giving the government until November 15 to take action. As no decision was taken within the stipulated time, the forum announced a renewed phase of agitation.
According to the organization, two phases of mass sit-in demonstrations will be held in December—on December 14 in Udaipur and on December 21 in Dharmanagar. Handbills will be distributed statewide to raise public awareness about the long-standing deprivation faced by irregular employees. If the government still fails to respond, a larger demonstration will be organized in Agartala in January.
The forum also criticized the government for failing to utilize the one-month extension of the 16th Finance Commission’s tenure—now valid until November 30—to include irregular employees under committed expenditure. They alleged that the government's reluctance to resolve the issue indicated an intentional delay, which they said was harmful to the state’s image.
