In a major push towards preserving Tripura’s natural heritage and boosting tourism, Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman has sought the Centre’s support for the restoration and holistic development of Rudrasagar Lake, envisioning its transformation into one of India’s iconic lake destinations.
Barman recently met Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti Dr Raj Bhushan Choudhary at his official residence and held detailed discussions on a range of measures aimed at restoring the historic lake and unlocking its ecological, cultural and tourism potential.
During the meeting, Barman, who also represents the area as an MLA, emphasised the urgent need for a comprehensive restoration plan. His proposals included increasing the lake’s water-holding depth, improving its water-retention capacity, modernising the water-flow management system of Noachhara and renovating the confluence of the Kanchigang and Gomati rivers.
Seeking the Centre’s active cooperation, the minister stressed that coordinated efforts and adequate financial assistance would be crucial to ensuring the lake’s long-term conservation and sustainable development.
Highlighting Rudrasagar’s significance as one of Tripura’s valued natural and historical assets, Barman said that scientific restoration, improved water management and planned infrastructure development could help establish the lake as a prominent tourist destination without compromising its ecological balance and natural beauty.
He also pointed out that the proposed initiative could generate employment opportunities for local people, encourage tourism-related enterprises and strengthen the economy of the surrounding areas. A sustainable development model, he suggested, would not only protect the lake’s heritage but also create new avenues for livelihood and regional growth.
According to Barman, the Union Minister gave due consideration to the issues raised and assured him that appropriate steps would be taken at the earliest.
Expressing hope for a positive outcome, Barman said that the proposed initiative could pave the way for a new chapter in Rudrasagar’s development. With sustained efforts, scientific conservation and support from the Centre, the historic lake could emerge as a landmark destination on India’s tourism map, preserving its natural legacy while creating lasting benefits for future generations.
