Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury today underscored the need for public awareness and personal integrity among both consumers and sellers to ensure the overall development of the state and the country.
Speaking at a “discussion cycle” on Laws of Legal Metrology held at a private hotel in Agartala, the minister said accurate measurements play a crucial role in maintaining product quality and protecting consumer rights.
Chowdhury highlighted that legal metrology is essential to ensure fairness in commercial transactions, as it enforces standards for weights and measuring instruments used in the market.
“Measurement is very important. Legal metrology ensures that the weights and measuring instruments used in commercial transactions comply with standard norms, which protects consumers,” he stated. He urged citizens to stay vigilant about the use of accurate weights and measurements in daily purchases.
The event focused on the latest amendments to the Legal Metrology Act and associated rules, as well as the future plans of the Government of India in the field of legal metrology. The minister addressed participants and emphasized the state government’s commitment to strengthening regulations that safeguard consumer interests.
Several prominent officials and industry representatives attended the event, including Debapriya Vardhan, Secretary of the Department of Food, Public Procurement and Consumer Affairs; Ashutosh Agarwal, Director of Consumer Affairs and Legal Metrology, Government of India; and Dr. Rajeshwar Kumar, Director of the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology. Sub-divisional administrators from across Tripura, members of the Petroleum Dealers Association, officials of Tripura Natural Gas Corporation (TNGCL), representatives of fair price shops, traders, hoteliers, and members of various business organizations were also present.
The program was conducted smoothly under the moderation of Sumit Lodh, Director of the Department of Food, Public Procurement and Consumer Affairs.
The discussion aimed to strengthen coordination among stakeholders and enhance awareness on the significance of legal metrology in ensuring fair trade practices throughout the state.
