In a statement that has sparked controversy, Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman today claimed that the media is an enemy targeting public representatives.
Minister said this while addressing Two Days Panchayat Raj Capacity Building programme at State Panchayat Resource Centre, A. D Nagar, Agartala
Addressing chairpersons and Sabhadhipatis, the minister warned them to remain cautious, saying, “Behind all of you there is an enemy. An enemy may be from the opposition, the ruling party, the media, or other platforms.”
He further urged the leaders to diligently fulfill their social and political responsibilities, implying that vigilance against these so-called enemies was part of their duties. Critics have expressed concern that such remarks undermine the role of a free press in democratic governance.
He further stressed the importance of fulfilling responsibilities with integrity, adding that public representatives must diligently carry out their social, political, and administrative duties. However, his remarks that the media could be considered an enemy have drawn immediate criticism, raising concerns about freedom of the press and the role of media in holding public officials accountable.
