In response to the rising number of road accidents, Tripura Police has initiated an intensive, state-wide enforcement drive to curb underage driving.
In a press release, the police stated that the campaign targets juveniles below 18 years of age found operating motorized vehicles—an offence strictly prohibited under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Authorities stressed that underage driving poses a significant threat to public safety.
“The amended provisions of the Act make it illegal for anyone under 18 to drive a motorized vehicle. Guardians or vehicle owners who allow minors to drive will be held responsible. Penalties are stringent: a fine of Rs 25,000 for guardians or vehicle owners, imprisonment of up to three years for responsible adults, and cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for one year. Additionally, juveniles caught driving illegally will be barred from obtaining a driving licence until they turn 25,” the release stated.
Tripura Police urged all parents and guardians to strictly prevent minors from driving under any circumstances, emphasizing that public cooperation is vital for ensuring road safety across the state.
